March is birthday month at my house. All 3 of my girls have birthdays in March (which is coincidentally 9 months after our anniversary....weird). I have always hated those stupid pointy party hats with that awful elastic under the chin. I decided to make a more comfortable party hat that would solve that under the chin elastic problem. There are so many cricut cartridges that have cute party hat cuts. The cut I chose to use is from the Simply Charmed cartridge, but you could use the same technique with any other party hat cut from other cartridges. First is cut the shadow of the hat from black poster board (my favorite is from the dollar tree). Next I sewed 3/4 inch elastic to the base. While I had the sewing machine out, I stitched my ribbon so I could gather it, then glued it on to the bottom of the hat. I cut the blue layer out of poster board as well to help the hat be sturdy, the yellow layer is just regular cardstock and I used popdots to add that layer to the hat. I used popdots because if the stitching and ribbon there needed to be some space and a popdot worked great. In place of plain dots I cut out the red fun fur to add some texture. I just glued them in place with zip dry, (my favorite adhesive on the planet). Since I didn't put the face on the hat, (it is part of the cut on simply charmed) there was a perfect space for some vinyl. I added the phrase "Birthday Monster". As the kids have had their birthdays we bring out the special birthday monster hat and they proudly wear it on their day.

What do you think? Is this a technique you can apply to your crafting style? Thanks for stopping by!
